Following Back on Twitter to be Withdrawn

In a nutshell: Starting September 4, I will not follow anyone back anymore. People who I followed back before this date will not be unfollowed (as long as they are still active), but no more will be followed back.

I have decided to withdraw from following people back on Twitter. This is scheduled to go in effect on Sunday, September 4, 2011. Any users who I followed back up to that point will not be unfollowed if they still are active and still following me (see below). However, no new users will be followed back.

LastPass was possibly hacked into. While they don't know exactly what happened, they are assuming that someone has access the data.

we’re going to be paranoid and assume the worst: that the data we stored in the database was somehow accessed. We know roughly the amount of data transfered and that it’s big enough to have transfered people’s email addresses, the server salt and their salted password hashes from the database. We also know that the amount of data taken isn’t remotely enough to have pulled many users encrypted data blobs.

This announcement is intended to help you understand how you can better protect yourself.

How can my account be cracked?
Member accounts are always a weak point of entry. Your account can be cracked if someone is able to obtain access to your password, either by guessing it, stealing it, or using password recovery.

What should I do to protect my member accounts?

Use a good password. A good password contains at least 8 characters from at least 3 of the following sets:
- lowercase letters
- UPPERCASE LETTERS
- numbers (0-9)
- punctuation !@#$%^&*,.;`~-_+=()[]{}
and of course more is always better.

Your password should never be a dictionary word, all numbers, or a pattern like "qwertyuiop".

Your password should never be part of your username, either.

Protect your e-mail account. If your account is on a site like Yahoo or Hotmail, it can be accessed by successfully answering your password recovery question. If your question is something like "what is my pet's name?" many people can easily find this information. A password recovery can then be instituted and your account is a goner.

Remember to login to your email account very often. Email providers like Hotmail will delete your account if it is not used within 30 days. If it expired, all a cracker needs to do is create a new email account with the same username, use the password reminder feature to gain access to your account.

Never use the passwords listed as "good password" examples in an FAQ, as this is likely one of the first ways crackers try to access accounts.

Never tell anyone your password -- not even your closest friend. If you manage to let it slip, change it quickly.

If you are using a public computer, never use the option to always stay logged in (and never let the browser remember the password). Always log out after you are done to ensure your account is safe. If possible, delete the Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History.

Additionally, don't use your password as a password at any other site.

Beware of a hacking trick called "phishing." This is when a cracker sends you an email pretending to be from the site you are registered at.
- A cracker might tell you that your account has a problem and the site "needs" your password.
- A cracker might tell you that the site is purging unused accounts, and needs you to log in to a special page, and leaves a link to a log in page that looks like the site's login page. What it really does is submits your username and password into a list that the cracker has access to and then uses them to gain access to the accounts on the list.
Clues to spot a fake "phishing" email:
- Many sites will never ask you for your password.
- Look at the headers. If the headers don't match the ones from the other emails you have received from the site, it will most likely be someone else.
- Only log in from the site's home page. Don't ever log in from the URL in the email.
If you ever receive a "phishing" email, report the entire email, including the headers, to the email provider and the site that email is explaining. Also, mark the email as Spam and/or Phishing if it isn't already.

Also be wary of add-ons (for games, browsers, etc.) you install. Some of them might have malicious programming built into it that could be used to hijack your account by keylogging your password. You should only download them from trusted sites that are well known within the community.

Just a reminder: "password" is not a good password. "12345" is not a good password. "qazwsxedc" is not a good password (pattern). "qRvMaoNx53" is a good password. "n9c_E#wEdaD" is a better password.

I have listed some tools here that may be of use.

Random Password Generator - The PC Tools Password Generator creates random passwords that are highly secure and extremely difficult to crack due to an optional combination of lower and upper case letters, numbers and punctuation symbols.

PWGen Firefox Extension - pwgen, stands for "password - generator". Upon install, a small 'P' icon will show up in the statusbar of your browser. One click on the icon and a password is instantly generated, shown and copied into your clipboard.

LastPass - A secure password manager, which is cross-platform and cross-browser. It has an add-on for most of the major browsers out there, and has bookmarklets for the browsers it doesn't support. The data is only encrypted and decrypted on your computer, and is encrypted using AES-256, meaning no one can access your data without your email and password. (Make this password a good one!) Only the encrypted data is stored on LastPass's servers. Some of their features include one master password, synchronization between browsers, automatic form filling, one-click login, one-time passwords, 2-step authentication, and more. They also have an upgrade option ($12 a year!) that includes support for mobile devices.

Further Reduced Online Time Activity - Effective April 3, 2011

On January 9, 2011, I have reduced my time online to devote to more time doing homework.

Unfortunately, these were not enough, so my online activity will be further reduced, effective April 3, 2011. Visitation to most sites will be affected. See the mega-list for visitation information.

This is happening for many reasons including, but not limited to, large amounts of homework and reduced bus service to and from school.

Spell check exists in a wide variety of programs. For example, word processing programs like Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org Writer include one. Mozilla Firefox also has one built into it. But don't ever rely solely on it! Here's an example why:

That's wrong! "Clean Your Hard Drive" was correct here (I was showing possession). If I would have made that so-called "correction," it would have read "Clean You're Hard Drive" which is the same as saying "Clean You Are Hard Drive." I'm not trying to say that.

Don't rely solely on your spell checker. Don't just go with the first choice it gives you. Proofread your work, too!

When the book came out, there were many spoilers out there, fake and real ones. In fact, these came out before the book came out. I wanted to avoid them, period. Decimic's Online Activity will be Greatly Reduced!

aka - Decimic Faces Possible...Time Cuts???
I changed the name because it doesn't sound right.

Decimic now has limited time on his hands. This will change Decimic (well, at least his online life).

Decimic is registered at a lot of message boards and websites, but now doesn't have the time to visit them all.

Some places will remain the same, some places will see reduced time spent there, some places I will remain at, but only visit when I'm not too busy, and some places I will delete/close/cancel/abandon accounts.

Changes will happen after the first of the year of 2011. This is not the way I wanted to start Decimic 4.0 in January 2011, but due to me having limited time, this has to be the way it's going to be, unfortunately.

Decimic 3.9 is scheduled for September 5th 2010, and may see accounts on a few sites be deleted (the ones I don't visit often).

UPDATE NOVEMBER 10TH, 2010 - The list is being revised and will come. Also, Xmarks is shutting down the day after, so this will reduce online activity further due to more time being devoted to manually updating the bookmarks.

I am pushing back Decimic 3.8. It was scheduled for June 13, 2010, but since I am going to attempt to fix my computer, I am pushing it back. It is now scheduled for June 20, 2010.

Decimic's Computer Crashed

My computer had crashed. When I try to turn it on, it will say "Operating System not found." The BIOS does not see the hard drive at all, so the problem may be the hard drive. It may have failed, or something that connects to the hard drive is faulty.

I was going to open it up, only to find the screws are stripped. Later that night, I used a pocket knife to get them to unscrew.

Will continue investigation.

Update 5/27/2010 - Hard drive may have failed. I will try the "freezer" trick on the hard drive. (Putting it in the freezer and trying it later.)

Update 5/28/2010 - After doing the freezer trick on the hard drive, the computer still will not boot. The problem might be the cable that connects the hard drive. The computer will have to be taken to the computer repair man because I tried everything I can do.

Update 6/11/2010 - I bought a new hard drive (and cleaning kit) because it is cheaper than paying a lot of money to get the hard drive replaced.

Update 6/13/2010 - I cleaned the inside of the computer and installed the new hard drive. Everything is OK so far.

Update 6/13/2010 - It's working again.

This was an April Fools joke - I'm not really giving up my computer hobbies.

Hello. This is Decimic.

Over 6 years, I have been on the Internet to make a few friends, and chat with others. I even helped with web pages as well.

Now, I think I have been spending too much time on computers and not enough outside getting fresh air.

I will be transferring colleges and will no longer be going for web design, but for some kind of job that takes place outside.

Over the next few days, starting April 2, I will be deleting/closing/canceling/deactivating/abandoning all profiles at social networking profiles, forum profiles, blogs, etc. Decimic 3.7 will not be released. The Real-Life blog will remain, but that's it.

Decimic 3.5 experienced problems with releasing. The problems will be fixed in Decimic 3.6. This includes the Mega-List of Forums and Site of Decimic.

Other features will include:

Images not hosted on ImageShack. (Images already on ImageShack will still be there, but will eventally be moved to another provider)
Twitter list changes:
- I only have three lists - Sports, Services, and People I actually follow.
- For example, in my Services list, I have stuff all mixed up - including Twitter, Firefox, ProBoards, WhatPulse, Port Authority, GeekShed, LastPass, and so on. This can get confusing.
- The new lists will consist of (but not limited to) Programs, Extensions, Boards, IRC, and Pittsburgh.
  - Firefox and WhatPulse will fall under Programs
  - LastPass will fall under Extensions
  - ProBoards will fall under Boards
  - GeekShed will fall under IRC

My Opinion about Vista

Vista: Most say it sucks. I disagree with all of those people.

Most people out there are complaining about Windows Vista. There are tons of videos on YouTube about this, and occasionally I see a topic on a message board about this.

I have Vista myself, and I have not encountered any problems for the one year and one month I have had Vista.

The worst problems I have encountered with an operating system was with Windows ME. It was fine for a little bit, but after that it started to lock up every hour. I also kept getting BSOD’d every 5 minutes. After months of nothing but that, I decided we needed a new computer.

Jumping ahead to my Vista days, I have not encountered major problems with it. Some people are saying “compatibility issues,” but All the programs I use work with Vista. Some people are saying that [insert some program that I have that other people say it doesn’t work on theirs] is not compatible with Vista. Either I don’t know why it isn’t working for them, or I don’t know why it is working for me.

In a nutshell: Vista does not suck.

Also, I have read this a while ago, and I agree with this guy.

I just got suspended from a message board for 10 days because of "suspicious activities." WTF? I DID NOT EVEN POST THERE SINCE AUGUST 15TH! How could I have done anything wrong there?

That would be a message board I would not visit again. I got a PM from a mod there saying "Sorry, dude. You've been suspected of...Br. Don't wanna talk about it."

But they were recently cracked into, so more than just me might have been warned.

Before the new era begins, the image randomizers should be good with no problems. The avatars has to be finished as well. Right now, there are a few stuff that need to be worked on.

The preliminary date is: July 18th, 2008 at 11:15 PM (EDT). That will be a little after I watch Psych's 3rd season premiere.

If I do not have everything completed by this date, it will be pushed back. However, I will try to finish by this date.

Happenings at Chao Club

Chao Club was cracked into. A user with the name of "Ike" cracked it. He deleted all the boards and users. Unfortunately, ProBoards cannot restore individual boards and users, they can only restore a forum as a whole. Five years if Chao Club history has been destroyed. Chao Club has relocated to another forum (Temp CC).

Chao Club's creator, The Ultimate Chao Master (UCM), abandoned Chao Club after the hacking.

Chao Club was hit again at the relocation area. Users were once again deleted, and we has to re-register.

A new Chao Club site has been announced, and to be hand-coded?

Shad was to host it. But then, Shad has problems in Algebra and then got his computer taken away. No CC host then?

When Shad got his computer back, CC was in development again.

After a while, Mega Shadow Chao (MSC) had disappeared. Draconum Tamer (DT) had thought MSC abandoned CC like UCM did. Oh no! DT was going to give up on Chao Club.

DT then turned to an Simple Machines forum. Not long after that, MSC had re-appeared, which means the new CC was back in development?

Will the new CC be delayed again, or will it open soon?

Well then, the New CC was open. But after a few weeks LunarPages shut down the new CC for excessive CPU power usage. Luckily, MSC was able to recover all the data. So then the Chao Club had to return to Temp CC.

UCM then returned. DT then said to all CC members:

This is no longer Temp CC. This is Chao Club. You will act here as you would act on new CC. I have a lot of ideas that I will be putting through to MSC and UCM, but until then, just go by that. CC is not down. CC is here. CC is not made by a smaller URL or a website without ads, it is made by a group of users getting together and chatting on a forum. This proboard can do that as well as any host. So treat this "temp CC" like new CC until we get our hosting back. There is no reason to lose spirit.

The news that many of you may have heard is true. UCM has returned, and he will be serving as our third admin. This fact makes losing our hosting worth it, for now we will be a much stronger forum under CC's original owner. Let us look not to the bad but to the good; let us not look to the past, but to the future. Chao Club is here. You are here. This is our home.

Then, finally, MSC got a temporary New CC host. On the new CC after it re-opened, MSC said:

Well, that's over. After some downtime (AGAIN... *sigh*), CC is now back up and fully operational. This time, it's being hosted on a computer my dad owns on our personal network. Hopefully it should run much faster and generally better than it did on LP. If, however, you spot any problems with the server, please let us know. =)

So then, enjoy. Hopefully this host should be permanent - or should last until we DO get a permanent host - so don't worry.

After a few months, CC Staff was done with all the lax mods, and returned their previous state of enforcing the written rules. UCM's post explains it all:

For the past half year CC's been a cesspit lacking any rules or self restraint. We've had written rules since this new site came up, but they haven't been enforced or probably even read in a month. It all started when we were hacked and were forced to move to Temp CC. Since it was temporary and the staff was busy scrambling to remake the site, people figured "to hell with the rules". Unfortunately, that attitude has been brought to this new site. I'm telling you that's going to stop now.

Our recent anarchy has given us a bad reputation among friendly and rival forums alike, we can't operate like that. From now on we're going to start enforcing the rules that we've had written down for months. If you need to be refreshed on what the rules are, and what the penalties are for breaking them.

CC's always been a harsh forum where idiocy has been expelled by arguments and anger. This new policy isn't an attempt to censor people and force everyone to be happy and nice; it's just going to be a sieve for obnoxious, whiny people who will just piss everyone off. It's going to give CC some order and maturity which will attract intelligent new members who will help with good posts. Our mods will no longer be "members with pretty titles" but will actually work for their positions and keep CC interesting.

CC's coming back, we promise.

It was called Sonic the Hedgehog World. It started on September 19th, 2003 at exactly 7:30 PM. It closed on February 14th, 2006.

In the future, I plan on re-opening the Sonic the Hedgehog World (with its planned version 4), only I will be starting fresh this time. It will be under a different name, but it will have the opening date of the original Sonic the Hedgehog World along with the re-open date.

I now have a separate blog for my online life. I used to post the online stuff with the personal life stuff, and everything was mixed together, and I was very disorganized. That's why I created this blog.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Spoilers

There are spoilers out there for the new Harry Potter book coming out on July 21st. I mean, there are copies of the pages of the book scanned and uploaded to the Internet already.

No one should know anything about the new book until it comes out on July 21st. Until 3 days after that then, I don't want to know what happens, no matter how major or minor. I don't even want to know any fake spoilers. There is no way to tell if they are fake or not until it comes out. I want to read the book and find out what happens myself. No one should have the book yet. I don't want it yet.

Basically, the above can be condensed into:
Please do not spoil me until three days after the book is released, or you will be magically blocked.

Anyone IMing me (or telling me in any way) any spoilers of any kind will be immediately blocked without warning. Fake spoilers WILL be treated the same way.
